{DIY} Birthday Countdown Frame

My daughter's 5th birthday is fast approaching, so when I spotted a beautiful Birthday Countdown Frame at Lemon Tree Creations I knew I had to make her one! I followed the general spirit of the project (you can find their tutorial here), but changed it up a bit to suit our love of all things bright & fun!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this project! My daughter was so excited to start counting down the days to her birthday and loves to change the numbers each morning. It just adds to the excitement surrounding her special day.

It was very easy to make and can be easily tailored to match your favorite colors!

Here's what you need:
-frame w/ glass removed (I used an 8 x10)
-paint
-scrapbook paper (one sheet for your background)
-card stock (several for the cards...I used about 10 sheets of mixed colors)
-one wooden clothespin
-chipboard or sticker numbers (enough to make 1 through 31)
-adhesive spray and/or craft glue
-hot glue
-letter stickers (to spell Happy Birthday)
-chipboard decoration or other embellishment (I used a cupcake)
-circle craft punch (I used a 2")

I began with a plain white wooden frame I had in my box of extra frames.

I then spray painted the frame (and the clothespin) using Krylon paint in Watermelon. I really love this color and am already looking around my girls room to see what I else I can paint!

While the frame dried, I cut down my scrapbook paper to fit the back of the frame. I then glued the scrapbook paper on using my spray adhesive.

I hot glued the cupcake decoration onto the clothespin. The cupcake is without a doubt my daughter's favorite part (a girl after my own heart)! I then hot glued the clothes pin onto the back. It's important to make sure that you don't glue the clothespin too close to the edge so that there is room to put the frame back on.

I spelled out Happy Birthday with my stickers and attached them. Again, make sure you place them far enough from the frame edge so that they won't get hidden by the frame.

Of course you can't have a countdown frame without numbers! The frame at Lemon Tree Creations is made with these really adorable flash cards. I decided to keep things simple (and a little more budget friendly) by making some simple cards myself.

I used various colors of card stock to make the squares and then using my 2" circle punch, I made the circles. I purchased chipboard numbers to stick onto the circles. Then I glued the circles onto the squares!

And let me tell you...I had the hardest time finding a package of just numbers...chipboard or stickers!!! You can buy letters in every font and color imaginable, but apparently numbers aren't that hot of a seller!

And there you have it! A super easy and super fun Birthday Countdown Frame.

Of course my daughter is waiting waiting waiting for the BIG DAY!

I hope you enjoy making this countdown frame and counting down the days to your big day!
